Joe Moen
1927 -2014
Joe Moen was known as a long-time radio personality in the Greater Beloit area, but he also had deep roots in the community and volunteers much of his time to support community projects and organizations.
He held leadership roles in the Beloit Lions Club, Elks Club, Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce, Stateline united Way and served on the board of directors for Beloit Memorial Hospital. He also was one of the founders of the Beloit Brewers, and was the first chairman of the board, and later the executive committee for the Beloit Snappers. He was the first chairman of the board of the Greater Beloit Community Foundation, which now is the Stateline Community Foundation.
Moen was born in Beloit and was a 1945 graduate of Beloit Memorial High School. He married Eleanor Grandholm on June 21, 1952. He served in the U.S. Army. Moen joined WBEL radio in Beloit in 1948 as an announcer and advertising salesman. He rose through the ranks to become sales manager and station manager. In 1983 he was named president of WBEL. He retired from the radio station in 1988.
In 1993, he was inducted into the Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame. In 1996, he was inducted into the Rock County Hall of Fame. In 2004, Moen was inducted into the Everett C. Haskell Hall of Honor. In 2012, he was honored with the Stateline Community Foundation’s Bridge to the Future Award.
Moen died on November 9, 2014. His wife Eleanor, preceded him in death in 2011.
