Back to Beloit History News & Announcements

This color postcard depicts Arthur Pratt Warner of Beloit flying his Curtiss Pusher for the first time on November 4, 1909. Warner was the first person in Wisconsin to achieve flight, and he was also the first private individual in the United States to purchase an airplane. The Curtiss Pusher was the third built by Glenn H. Curtiss.

The plane arrived in Beloit disassembled, so Warner had to assemble it without any instructions. In addition to this challenge, he also had to teach himself how to fly. A historical marker near Beloit marks the location of this first flight.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the flight, members of Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 60 in Beloit teamed up with the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame to construct a quarter-scale model of the Curtiss Pusher airplane flown by Warner.

The model is on permanent display at the Beloit Historical Society.
