Kevin Joseph Keenan
1915 – 1967
Mr. Keven Joseph Keenan was a prominent Beloit attorney and civic leader, devout churchman, active in his local, state and national bar associations. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Keenan received his education at Brother Dutton School, Beloit High School, Marquette University and Law School.
A product of Beloit, Mr. Keenan was one of its most active boosters, being awarded the “outstanding Beloiter” award from the JC’s in 1954. An activist, Mr. Keenan sought a position on the City Council in 1953 so that he could develop some ideas he had relative to making Beloit a better environment. He served for ten years on the Council, eight of which he served as president of that body. A speaker of note and a historian by nature and birth, in 1915 Mr. Keenan proved his adaptability by serving on the board of trustees of Beloit Memorial Hospital. Advocate of a new library, he was greatly instrumental in the establishment of Alcoholic’s Anonymous Infor-mation Center, The Beloit Animal Welfare Shelter and the Beloit Boy’s Club.
He also served the community by election to the Board of Trustees of the Pinehurst Sanitarium, appointed Family Court Com-missioner for Rock County and through Presidential decree, made appeal agent for the Selective Service Board. Mr. Keenan, born in 1915, proved that his religious heritage in St. Jude’s Church rubbed off on the community through exemplary conduct. His unexpected death in 1967 at age 51 stunned this community since his interest in family and city was difficult to replace. His interest in legal affairs proved of value in his appointment to the Beloit Police and Fire Commission where both the civil servants and members valued his even handed judgement.
