Allan W. Adams
1910 – 1992
Allan was a Beloiter, attended Beloit public schools and gradu-ated from Harvard in 1932 during the Great Depression. He then proceeded to work his way through the University of Wisconsin Law School, working as a bouncer at the Student Union; he graduated and was admitted to the Wisconsin Bar in 1935. Allan immediately returned to Beloit and became a partner with his father Harry W. Adams in the firm of Adams and Adams.
Throughout his career, he worked closely with his father and with his brother, Arthur. His father, a civic and business leader and former Mayor of Beloit, was inducted into the Beloit Hall of Fame in 1966. It is only fitting that Allan and his brother Arthur, continuing the example of service and contributions to Beloit shown to them by their father, should join him as a member of the Beloit Hall of Fame at this time.
Allan, his father Harry and brother Arthur formed the Adams Corporation in 1942, manufacturing Korn Kurls and licensing other manufacturers to make the product; they sold the company to Beatrice Foods in 1961. Mr. Adams then served as President of Adams International Division of Beatrice Foods, formed to market machinery for manufacturing the product. As proclaimed in newspapers throughout the State at the time of his death, he was a pioneer in the snack food industry. Mr. Adam’s talents, business and legal expertise were recognized and in constant demand as shown by his service as a president of Dell Food; as a director of the M&I Bank Beloit, the National Mutual Life Insurance Company, the Wisconsin Power & Light Company and subsidiary corporations of Beatrice Foods in Norway, Italy and Ireland.
He was also a director of Regal-Beloit Corporation, additionally serving as its corporate secre-tary and general counsel. Despite his busy and successful business and professional career, Mr. Adams found time to devote to public service for his community. He was a director of the YMCA for 22 years and President for 9 years. He was a director of the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance for 22 years, of the Beloit ARC for 22 years and the United Givers board.
He was also a Paul Harris Rotary Fellow, a member of the University of Wisconsin Bascom Hall Society and Beloit College Chapin Society and served as President of the Rock County Bar Association. Allan W. Adams was an unassuming man, always friendly, interested in people from all walks of life and ready to lend a hand. He was charitable – giving not only material contributions but also sharing his wealth of know-ledge. Mr. Adams died June 4, 1992, at the age of 81. This editorial in the Beloit Daily News eloquently sums up his life: “Caring family man, faithful churchman, able lawyer, bold entrepreneur, generous supporter of good causes, tireless seeker of the proverbial ‘better mouse trap’ and loyal booster of Beloit – Allan W. Adams was all of these. His presence, his influence for good and his staunch confidence in the ultimate triumph over adversity…all will be missed. But the community and all whose lives he touched, are the better for the good life he lived.”
