Captain Thomas A. Power

c.1800 – 1951

Captain Power settled in Beloit in 1842, purchased property on lower State Street and about 1849 sold it to A.B. Carpenter. He was a man of powerful physique and a striking individual, lived well, kept a coachman and drove about the country before the days of railroads in style and comfort. He owned several farms and much village property on both sides of the Rock River. At the time of his death, September 10, 1951, he owned and occupied the house formerly standing at the southwest corner of Broad and Park Avenue which was the residence of J.B. Dow for several years. His remains were first buried in the old chapel on his property opposite the Munger shop on Broad Street, but later removed to a vault in St. Thomas Church on Grand Avenue, the land there having been donated to the church by his widow, Lucy Powers.
