David Throne

1858 – 1950

David Throne was born on March 12, 1858, in Turtle Township, the son of John and Helen Sharp-Throne. He attended Zilley rural school and graduated from Beloit High School.

He began his career as a teacher before being elected Rock County Superintendent of Schools, a role he held from 1889 to 1903. In this position, he played a vital role in educational development, frequently visiting schools and participating on state teachers’ committees.

On June 3, 1893, he married Mabel Scott, granddaughter of early pioneer David Merrill, at the First Presbyterian Church of Beloit. They had two children: a son, Stuart, and a daughter, Helen (Mrs. Dewey Reimer).

After stepping down as Superintendent, Mr. Throne spent ten years working at Fairbanks Morse Company. He then became Beloit City Treasurer in 1945, a position he held for over 23 years. He was known for his commitment and rarely missed a day of work.

A dedicated public servant and civic leader, Mr. Throne was actively involved in politics, particularly with the Republican Party. He served as Chairman of the Second District Assembly and led the Beloit Republican Party from 1924 to 1932.

He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), and the Beloit Historical Society. At a Historical Society meeting in 1941, he recounted hearing of President Lincoln’s assassination as a child — a neighbor, visibly shaken, shared the news while passing by in a buggy.

David Throne passed away on April 4, 1950 — Election Day — at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his son in 1922 and his wife in 1941.
