Franklin G. Hobart
1864 – 1960
Franklin G. Hobart, engineer and city official, was born January 31, 1864, in Oak Creek, now South Milwaukee. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Adin P. Hobart. He graduated from the Univer-sity of Wisconsin school of engineering in 1886 and after employment with an eastern concern, was hired by W. H. Wheeler of the Williams Engine Works (later a part of Fairbanks Morse and Company) in 1889.
Since that time, for 64 years, until his retirement, Mr. Hobart was identified with the Hill plant. He became a noted authority in the field of gas and oil engine design. After 1929 he served as consulting engineer in the field of oil wall engines. A distinctive honor came to Mr. Hobart when he was one of seven engineers to be presented a citation by Edwin B. Fred, university president at a diner at the memorial Union building in Madison.
Mr. Hobart was active in civic affairs. He is a former Beloit alderman and has served on the Board of Education. He was one of the leaders in the construction of the Beloit Hospital and served on a special committee relative to the new senior high school site. He has been active with the Wisconsin University Alumni Club in Beloit. He was a donor of Hobart Park to the city. Mr. Hobart died October 2, 1960.
