George (Bud) A. Garrigan

1894 – 1969

George Garrigan was born on June 10, 1894, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Belle Garrigan. A native Beloiter, he served his country in two world wars with great distinction for which he was recognized with a host of medals.  He was a graduate of the Beloit public schools and the University of Wisconsin Law School. A truly compassionate and understanding individual, Attorney Garrigan began his law career in his native city during the 1920’s.

After being severely wounded in the Argonne Forest during World War I, France episode and a lengthy recuperation, he was awarded by his surviving comrades with a beautiful wood cane, now at rest in the Hanchett-Bartlett Homestead. Upon returning Mr. Garrigan married the former Marie Burnette, May 5, 1920, now a resident of Janesville. After his start in the legal practice here in Beloit, his efforts turned to the political field, being elected the third District Attorney of Rock County, which respon-sibilities he discharged with honor.

While engaged in forming his own law firm – Garrigan, Kaithley, O’Neal, Dobson, Elliott and DeLong – he assumed the senior partnership and helped to make it one of the outstanding legal firms in Beloit. He also found time to help organize numerous institutions which bore his unmistakable imprints. Attorney Garrigan was one of the founders of the local Boy Scouts and the former Legion Drum and Bugle Corps. He was elected twice to the Commander post of the local Legion to which he contributed a great deal of energy.

He also found time to spear-head the drive for a municipal swimming pool, served on the Common Council of Beloit, chaired drives for the Community Chest, the Salvation Army, Red Cross, YMCA and the Association for Retarded Children. Mr. Garrigan was very active in the Beloit Rotary Club, the Rock County Bar Association and the First Methodist Church. In 1965, although semi-retired, he found time to stimulate his former activities. A true Beloit, he died on May 26, 1969.
