Harry Russell Wolfe

1908 – 1989

Harry R. Wolfe was born November 13 1908, the son of Harry Frederick and Lulu M. Bement Wolfe. Harry began playing the piano at age five. After graduating from Beloit College in 1931, he earned his M.A. degree in 1933. He married Virginia Schafer on August 24, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois. One daughter, Pamela, was born to this couple. He began his working career with the Rock County Relief Department as a case worker.

In 1935 he joined the faculty at Roosevelt Junior High School where he taught English until his retirement in 1973. He was a member of the Beloit Area Retired Educators Association. He was a well-known Beloit performing musician. For 30 years he was the organist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. For years, he performed for Treble Clef and in recent years he performed at Carlyle Nursing Home for sing-a-longs. He had been a guest artist for the Beloit-Janesville Symphony Orchestra three times. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the army. He was a member of the vestry of St. Paul’s Episcopal church, the Y.M.C.A., the Beloit College Alumni Association and its executive board. He was a member of the Beloit Historical Society, the Rock County Historical Society and Friends of the Library.

In 1986, Wolfe was voted one of the “Ten Most Admired Senior Citizens” in the State of Wisconsin and was feted by the State Fair in Milwaukee as one who had made outstanding contributions to his community. Harry R. Wolfe died on March 20, 1989, in his home at 1834 Strong Street, Beloit. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; one daughter, Dr. Pamela Wolfe; one son-in-law, Dr. George Lind of Beloit and two grand-daughters Carrie Lind and Sara Lind of Beloit. Funeral services were held from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Father John Warden officiating. Internment was in the chapel of Joseph of Arimathea Columbarium.
