Horace White, Sr.
1810 – 1843
The individual most responsible for insuring the future of Beloit was Dr. Horace White. Born in New Hampshire in 1810, he received his medical degree from Dartmouth College and began his practice in Colebrook.
In 1836 he was elected agent for the New England Emigrating Company, entrusted with the responsibility to choose “land fit for an agricultural community.” For this he was paid $100 a month. He arrived here in the dead of winter in 1837. To him went the record for fiscal responsibility, integrity, firmness in administration, as well as the health of the new community. As a bookkeeper he was meticulous, unbiased and fair in the interest of each individual member.
The physical and mental demands were such as to insure his early demise on December 25, 1843, exactly six years after his arrival. Death was due to tuberculosis with which many of the pioneers suffered. Today we honor his memory very time we drive by Horace White Park and on White Avenue.
