Hosie and Tishia Cameron from Pontotoc Mississippi | Beloit Historical SocietyFounded in 1910, the Beloit Historical Society (BHS) has and continues to serve not only as a repository of Beloit’s rich history, but a source of connection between the community and its heritage. As a means of connecting folk with Beloit’s history, the Historical society offers a variety of programming to the community. Educational programs include guest speakers and a walking tour through town, engaging with an array of prominent historical topics throughout Beloit’s timeline. Other programs offer community members the opportunity to engage with the Lincoln Center, home to the Beloit Historical Society and its exhibits and collections, whether as an informative tour or use of the physical space for private events.

Since its founding in 1910, the Beloit Historical Society has been connecting with the community to share Beloit’s stories. Step back in history as this presentation shares the growth and evolution of a local organization and learn its vision for its future.

  • Black Beloit: An Overview of Black History in Beloit

Explore the rich heritage of Bblack history in Beloit from the first residents in the late 1800s through the Great Migration.

  • Beloit’s Early Settlement

From Indigenous settlement to the creation of a city, this program shares the story of Caleb Blodgett, the New England Emigrating Company and the development of local business.

  • Time “Travel”: A History of Transportation in Beloit

Over the last two centuries, Beloit has been home to major changes in transportation, not only to get you around town, but to move people and things in and out of the city.

  • Growth of a City series

Beloit’s Women’s Clubs – During the late 1800s, women’s clubs were started for a variety of reasons. The clubs and organizations contributed significantly to the growth of their cities through several civic and welfare projects. This program focuses on Beloit’s women’s clubs and their contributions.

  • Early Industry

Explore the early industries in Beloit from the city’s founding in 1836, following their journey of growth and change. The program includes
the contribution of the Rock River to early businesses. Some of the businesses include dairy, Yates American Machine, Eclipse Windmill, Fairbanks Morse Co., Beloit Box Board and the early plow and scale companies.

Walking Tour

Explore Beloit on foot with a guided walking tour. Guided walking tours within Beloit.

Length is 45 minutes to an hour. Requires physical ability to stand and walk for the length of the tour. Includes a tour handbook.

Fee:
$5.00 per person, tour coordinator is free

Group size per tour guide:
20 maximum

Downtown Beloit:
Growth, Hardship, and Hope

Starting at Visit Beloit, the tour travels along the river walk to downtown Beloit. Discover the downtown area where Beloit was first established. Explore downtown Beloit’s growth, challenges, change and revitalization. Additional time can be provided for shopping at the end of the tour.

Museum Tour

Visit the Beloit Historical Society’s Lincoln Center facility at 845 Hackett St., Beloit, to explore various exhibits. The Elliott-Perring Sports Hall of Fame gallery celebrates local athletic achievement. The Arthur A. Missner Veterans Gallery honors the service of local residents in conflicts since the Civil War.

Temporary exhibits on a variety of topics are on display for a short time period. Contact the Beloit Historical Society office for current topics.
