Robert B. Cox

1924 – 1997

Robert B. Cox, a lifelong Beloiter, was the son of Bryon J. and Lucy B. Steaver Cox. A graduate of Beloit High School and the Uni-versity of Wisconsin, he, like so many of his generation, served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Cox was a successful business man as the third-generation owner and operator of Cox’s Garden Center, until his retirement in 1991.

However, his quiet and unassuming service to his community, has earned him the thanks of that Community, by recognizing him as a member of the Beloit Hall of Fame. Mr. Cox served the Second Congregational Church over the years as a Deacon, Trustee, Financial Secretary and Treasurer. He was a member of Morning Star Lodge No. 10, F.&M.A. A 41-year member of the Beloit Noon Lions, he was honored by that organization by the Melvin Jones Award for his community service. He was a long-time member of the Beloit Chamber of Commerce, active in the development of the business community of Beloit. He was sought out by his fellow citizens of Beloit for his help, professional knowledge and abilities, to serve for 15 years as a Trustee of Beloit Memorial Hospital during its formative years and the building of a new hospital facility for the Beloit Community.

When the idea of creating a community foundation was presented, Box Cox was a founding contributor and called on to become its Treasurer and he served in that capacity for nine years. Quietly, behind the scenes, Bob Cox gave countless hours of service for the betterment of his hometown, sought out by those who served with him for his quiet advice and assistance in improving the quality of life in his Community. Mr. Cox was survived by his wife, Doris Cornwell Cox and two daughters, one son and four grandchildren.
