William Reneau

1910 – 1981

William “Bill” Reneau was born August 6, 1910, in Pontotoc, Mississippi, the son of John Anthone and Nanie Lee Bolton Reneau. He married Ruth E. Weaver.

During his more than 60 years in Beloit, he set fine examples in citizenship, service, and integrity and was a dedicated leader. Bill Reneau was an industrious and able businessman. He was the owner and operator of Bill Reneau Auto Service at 631 St. Paul Avenue.

He was a past master and a member of the W.B. Kennedy Lodge #3, F & AM, Wisconsin Jurisdiction, Prince Hall affiliation, where he also served as treasurer. He was a member of Madison-Beloit Consistory #4 and of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Mr. Reneau served as past chairman of the finance committee of Wesley Church and was a participating member of the Beloit Association of Commerce. He was a member of St. Mathias United Methodist Church.

A special interest of his was working with young people. He served as a Scoutmaster and was an active member of the Baptist Club. He generously contributed his money, time, and ideas, and he headed a committee on Black business interests.

Though his community service included tireless efforts to foster harmony among citizens of all races, his contributions extended far beyond that. He was proud of his heritage and sought to instill that pride in others. He was a true Beloiter—committed to making Beloit a better place for everyone.

A human being dedicated to helping others, William Reneau died at the age of 71 on November 10, 1981.
