Elliott-Perring Sports Hall of Fame

1986 to present:

History of the Hall

The Sports Hall of Fame was founded following the death of Edward Louis “Ted” Perring in 1985 at the age of 57. Perring left a bequest of $5,000 to the historical society to honor athletes in the Beloit area.

A versatile athlete, Perring was a member of Beloit HIgh School’s state championship golf team in 1945, a city of Beloit golf campion and club champion at the Country Club of Beloit.

Wen thre historical society received the bequest, then society director Evelyn Wehrle asked historical society board member Jerry Elliot to form a committee. Elliott and the original committee members Edward Polglaze, Everett Haskell, George Stankewitz and Dr. Daniel Green, decided to honor Beloit’s great athletes by printing names of some of the city’s outstanding athletes at the entrance of the society’s Lincoln Center. The names were later removed during a renovation project. It was hten decided to prepare a list of Beloit’s Top-15 all-time athletes for enshrinement at the Beloit Historical Society. However, a tie among the committee resulted in 16 charter members being enshrined in 1986.

With the passing of Elliott in 2012 the current Sports Hall of Fame Committee chose to honor his role as co-founder by renaming the hall the Elliott-Perring Sports Hall of Fame. Born in Kenosha and a graduate of Prairie du Chien High School, Elliott became a true Beloiter. An Army veteran, Elliott came to Beloit after earning a law degree following studies at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and University of Wisconsin-Madison. Elliott married Carol L. Rundle on June 8, 1955 in Munich, Germany. On Feb. 1, 1959, Elliott became an associate at the Beloit law firm of Garrigan, Keithley, O’Neal & Dobson. Elliott was a shareholder in the firm of Elliott & Monahan Associates, S.C.

He was an active member of the Beloit, Rock County and Wisconsin Bar Associations and also dedicated his adult life to serving his adopted hometown of Beloit.

The Beloit Historical Society was one of Elliott’s favorite organizations serving as president (1983 – 1985) and as director during the period of the purchase and development of the present Lincoln Center. He was one of trhe founders of the Sports Hall of Fame and served as chairman of its induction ceremony from 1986 until his death on Aug. 31, 2013 at the age of 81.

in the 36-year history of the Hall of Fame, 198 outstanding local athletes or coaches have been enshrined,

Submit an Elliott-Perring Sports Hall of Fame Nomination

Criteria For Enshrinement

The following are guidelines used by the Elliott Perring Sports Hall of Fame Committee for enshrinement:

1. Inductees are to be a current or former resident (male or female) in the Beloit state-line geographic region who has athletic or coaching achievements worthy of being considered for induction. This includes athletes and coaches from Beloit/South Beloit region who have gone on to successful achievements beyond the Beloit area. The geographic region is specified as it relates to the mission area served by the Beloit Historical Society. The committee will strive to select as close to 5 inductees annually as possible.

2. The committee will also select one person or organization annually to receive the Elliott Perring Sports Hall of Fame Haskell Barkin Lifetime Achievement Award. This award was established in 1995 to honor those that may have not been outstanding athletes or coaches but have contributed significantly to Beloit’s sports heritage.

3. The committee has determined that Beloit College athletes, who are not residents in the Beloit region, will not meet the criteria for induction into the Elliott Perring Sports Hall of Fame as their time competing athletically in Beloit may have been only during their four years at Beloit College. These outstanding athletes may meet criteria to be recognized in the Beloit College Hall of Fame. Contact Beloit College for their nomination details.
